Discovering the Steub Trail in Cleland National Park
The hike from Cleland Wildlife Park to Mt Lofty is well worth experiencing. It’s a gentle stroll upwards as opposed to the Waterfall Gully Track which I will talk about soon.
The walks takes you through some dense bush and up the peak of the Adelaide Hills at Mt Lofty, a great spot to look out over Adelaide on a clear day. It’s also home to a pretty decent coffee spot for a quick refreshment before heading back down. The walk starts at the Cleland Wildlife Park car park and meanders past the koala resting area. Peaking through the fence you will spot several koalas enjoying some peace and quiet from the rest of the goings on at the park. The Steub trail is pretty decent with not many tripping hazards (it’s used as a bike trail too and is popular on weekends, so you’ll need to move over every now and then to allow the bikers through). There are numerous points at which incredible views can be sneaked through the forest canopy across the flat expanse of Adelaide and beyond. Birds are abundant as you climb, with kookaburra and lorikeets often making an appearance. It’s an easy trail only taking less than 2 hours to climb and return, with the pleasure of getting a coffee when reaching the top. The return leg is down hill allowing you to appreciate the views and keep your eyes peeled for the birds and mammals that inhabit the bush.
